Open Communication With Your Child

Keeping the communication lines open means talking to your child without drilling and grilling them with questions. Try to avoid asking them repeatedly “what’s wrong?” Rather, gently encourage them to talk without being overbearing.

You also want to avoid babying them or overprotecting. Try to avoid asking for the names of the people involved so that you can take care of business. Children must learn to handle their own battles with the careful yet distant watch of the parent.

Effective communication involves listening. Sometimes the best conversations take place when the parent just sits back and listens. These conversations may also take place when you least expect them to. Car rides to the grocery store or driving home from school may provide just the right atmosphere for your child to open up. Be ready and willing to listen to the spoken and unspoken cues so that you can help the situation.

Discuss the Problem with the School

When problems are severe and warrant additional involvement, the parent should schedule a meeting with the child’s teacher and principal. The school counselor may also be a key person to speak to about your child’s issues. When bullying is involved, parental intervention must be immediate and the school alerted so that the proper avenues can be taken. This is one area that should be immediately responded to.

If your child is struggling with a particular subject in school, such as math, meeting with the school counselor and teacher can help. The teacher may be able to offer additional help, resources or learning aids. Sometimes a student having trouble with a particular subject just needs a little extra encouragement so that their entire school day is not ruined.

Back to Basics – Remembering Who Your Child Is

There are times when your child may feel unmotivated in a subject or school as a whole. Think about who your child is and what motivates them. Take this information to the school counselor and see if a plan cannot be implemented to help motivate your child. Sometimes it is the simple and basic needs that are not getting met that cause a child to feel unmotivated.

If you believe your child is poorly understood, meet with the teacher or counselor and explain your child’s personality and what motivates him or her. The parent can be a huge asset when working together as a partnership with the school to provide motivational and personality clues.

Rest assured, your child is not prejudice when pointing out the obvious and inquiring why someone looks different than his or her own mommy or daddy. Young children respond to what they see in the world directly, meaning what is exclusively observable. It is up to the parents to foster a rich environment that includes races, cultures, and ethnicities.

Tip 1 – Take advantage of opportunities in your own community

Know an ethnic family at work or in the neighborhood? Invite them over for dinner and ask them questions about their culture. Allow the kids to ask questions and evoke discussions about the family’s heritage, beliefs, culture and daily life. This is a great opportunity for exposing your children to other cultures, outside of their own.

Dicen los expertos en educación que la perseverancia puede ser el factor que define el éxito o el fracaso de un niño. La perseverancia tiene que ver con no dejarse vencer, con seguir luchando, con liberar la fuerza interna que nos mantiene fuertes, con levantarse cuando los obstáculos nos han derrotado.

A continuación, proponemos algunas útiles estrategias para los padres que quieren enseñar a sus niños a no rendirse.

Sea un ejemplo sólido

¿Qué quiere decir ‘ser un buen ejemplo’ cuando se trata de enseñarle a su niño el valor de ‘nunca rendirse’? Pues quiere decir que no permita que su niño le vea tirar la toalla en algún proyecto, o abandonar una actividad que apenas comenzó. Inspire a su familia con un lema familiar; puede ser algo como “los Martínez nunca se rinden” o “los ganadores siempre terminan lo que empiezan”

Encuentre aspectos que inspiren al niño

¿Qué apasiona a su niño? ¿Qué le fascina? Si a su hijo le encanta el arte, métalo en clases de dibujo o de pintura. Si usted tiene en sus manos un pequeño amante de la música, ¿por qué no proporcionarle clases de piano o de violín? Si usted tiene más de un niño es importante recordar que es posible que tengan inclinaciones y gustos diferentes. Su segundo hijo puede no querer las clases de gimnasia que su hermano mayor quiso tomar y en su lugar puede querer algo totalmente distinto.

Sea muy claro con los detalles de un compromiso

Ofrézcale alabanzas y ánimo cuando se sienta triste y recuerde que es probable que el niño se esté auto-flagelando por el fracaso. El niño no necesita que lo pateen mientras está en el piso. Lo que necesita es que le levanten el espíritu con palabras de ánimo y de aprecio.

Sepa cuando es hora de renunciar

Este consejo puede sonar contraproducente, pero a veces es necesario tirar la toalla. Sin embargo, el modo de renunciar y las razones para hacerlo pueden también darle al niño una gran lección de vida acerca de qué es el triunfo. Si su hijo está bajo estrés, con problemas de conducta, no sintiéndose capaz de realizar la actividad o deporte en el que está comprometido. Si su niño pierde alegría y muestra signos de depresión, puede ser el momento de renunciar. According to educational experts, perseverance can be a defining factor on whether children succeed or fail. Perseverance has to do with not giving up, pushing forward, unleashing inner strength and bouncing back when afflicted by minor set backs.

Here are some helpful tips for parents who want to teach their children to never give up:

Be A Solid Role Model

What does it mean to be a role model in teaching your child the value of never giving up? It means that your child won’t witness you throwing in the towel on a task or giving up at the onset of an activity. Instill a family motto that you and your family live by, such as “the Jones’ never give up” or “winners finish what they started.”

Find That Inspire Factor

What is your child passionate about? What fascinates your kid and will present that ‘wow’ factor? If your child loves art, then enroll them in an art class or drawing lessons. If you have a music lover on your hands, why not provide piano or violin lessons? If you have more than one child, it is important to remember that they may not all love the same thing. Your middle child may not desire the gymnastics program that your oldest did, but opt for ballet or something entirely different.

Be Clear With The Commitment Details

In order to be fair to your child, it is important to be clear from the get-go. Whether it is a school project, science fair, new class, team sport or other activity, be up front with your expectations. Let them know that quitting is not an option unless an injury or sickness occurs or there are strange circumstances with the coach or leader. Your child must learn that commitment is critical to their success and certain things are non-negotiable.

Be Sure To Offer Praise

Don’t be the parent who grades exclusively on performance. Look at how hard your child is trying and the effort they give. Rather than being upset with them because the team lost or your child didn’t give a stellar performance, tell them how proud you are that they are working so hard. Offer praise and encouragement when they are feeling down and remember that they are probably already beating themselves up over the projected failure. They don’t need you to kick them while they’re down, but require you to pick them up with your praising words of encouragement.

Know When To Quit

This tip may sound counter-productive, but there may come a time when throwing in the towel is necessary. However, the way quitting is done and the reasons behind it may provide more lessons in success than you could have ever imagined. If your child is stressed, experiencing behavioral issues, unable to perform the sport or task, not joyful and showing signs of depression, it may be time to call it quits. Speak to the coach or mentor for advice if you are unsure of the problem, but be open to the needs of your child. Perhaps there is another activity just around the corner that will cause your child to thrive, grow and become a huge success.
